For automatic backwashing treatment units, there's typically one or two valves behind the control panel. Turn these to redirect flow around the treatment unit, bypassing it. This allows untreated water to pass.

For cartridge based treatment units, a bypass arrangement will need to be present: 

1. close the inlet and outlet valves

2. open the bypass valve

To put the ICS back into service, reverse this procedure.
