Persistent Smelly Yellow Scale in ToiletUpdated 3 months ago
Yellow or Smelly Scale in Toilets
Overview
It may come as a surprise, but we occasionally hear from customers about a yellow, difficult-to-remove scale forming in toilet bowls. Some homeowners assume this issue is caused by hard water and can be resolved with a PolyHalt®-powered ICS system — however, this specific problem has a different cause.
The Cause
This yellow or odorous buildup is not mineral scale. It forms when urine is left standing in the toilet for long periods without flushing. The urea in urine breaks down and precipitates out, creating a sticky yellow deposit on the porcelain.
PolyHalt® treats hard water scale, but it does not prevent or remove this type of organic buildup.
The Fix
Use a pumice stone, toilet cleaner, and some elbow grease to scrub away the deposits.
Regular cleaning will help prevent the buildup from returning.
The Real Fix
Flush the toilet after each use. This simple habit completely prevents the formation of this type of scale.
